In this photograph, Francis W. Kelsey is sitting at his desk in a University of Michigan classroom. Part of a Latin lesson entitled "Grammatical Interpretations" can be seen on the chalkboard behind him. Although Kelsey traveled extensively abroad, most of his professional time was spent in Ann Arbor teaching Latin language and literature, translating ancient texts, or procuring funds for the school's various archaeological expeditions. Kelsey taught at the University of Michigan for 38 years, and undoubtedly would have continued if not for his untimely death in 1927, at the age of 68. Even during his last days, spent in a private hospital in Ann Arbor, Kelsey was surrounded by his work, entertaining meetings with administrators, writing letters to colleagues abroad, and working to secure continued funding for the Kom Aushim excavation.
